Well it now makes sense on why Bob Wickman has been struggling recently. He’s been injured. The Atlanta Braves have placed closer, Wickman, on the DL and have activated Chad Paronto from the DL.
The Braves have placed closer Bob Wickman on the disabled list and activated reliever Chad Paronto.
Wickman struggled in three appearances the past five days, blowing leads Wednesday against Florida and Sunday against Colorado. He also had to be removed in the ninth inning Friday night against Colorado.
The veteran righthander has allowed five hits, six runs and six walks in 1 2/3 innings in his past three games.
More details on the injury and the amount of time he will be missing aren’t out yet, but I will update as they are released.
The Atlanta Braves have traded worthless 4th outfielder, Ryan Langerhans to the Oakland A’s in exchange for a Player To Be Named Later or cash considerations.
From David O’Brien of AJC.com:
LANGERHANS TRADED TO OAKLAND.
For cash or a player to be named. Braves are bringing up Willie Harris, who’s batting .362 with a homer and seven RBIs in 17 games at Richmond, and .412 vs. right-handed pitchers.
Bobby says doesn’t know how he’ll use him when I asked if it’d be platoon. But I think it will be.
There must really be some serious shit going on in Oakland if they would trade for Langerhans. Langerhans, after finally breaking an 0-29 slump, well once you go 0-29 is it really considered a slump? Anyways, back to what I was saying, Langerhans sucks, he’s a great outfielder but he makes Rafael Belliard look like, oh I don’t know, someone who doesn’t suck balls. Anyways, this is definitely addition by subtraction. Now we just need to find a way to lose Chris Woodward. Oh well, oh and on a side note, we lost today, Bob Wickman fell apart again and Holliday hit a walk-off 2-run shot off of Colyer in the 11th. But we got the Phillies coming to town so that should be fun and Woodward….go play in the street.
Making his first start after signing that new contract, John Smoltz wasn’t fooling anyone in the first inning. He started the game by walking Rockies speedster, Willy Tavares and then followed that by giving up a 2-run homerun to Troy Tulowitzki. He also gave up a double to Todd Helton before getting out of a hellish 1st inning. But what makes John Smoltz so great is his composure, he regrouped and struck out two in the next inning. The Braves got their offense started in the 2nd inning when Chipper Jones connected with a 2-run single that scored both Ryan Langerhans and Kelly Johnson. In the third inning, Smoltz got a little help from his All-Star centerfielder, Andruw Jones. Jones robbed Garrett Atkins of a homerun to preserve the Braves lead.
“Nothing to it. It’s all about positioning, finding the wall and locating the ball” said Andruw Jones after the game.
Atlanta had a big inning in the fourth when Jeff Francoeur hit an absolute, no doubter to deep left field. The Braves added to the score later in the inning when Kelly Johnson tripled and scored Langerhans. And the Braves final run came in the 9th inning when Edgar Renteria took Rockies closer, Brian Fuentes deep.
John Smoltz had a rough start but was able recollect himself and pitch 7 strong innings, 2 earned runs(both in the 1st inning), struck out 8 and walked only 1 batter. He was replaced in the 8th inning by Mike Gonzalez who pitched a scoreless inning of work, striking out one and was then replaced by Rafael Soriano in the 9th inning and Soriano was fantastic, striking out 2 men and gave up no runs.

The Braves will go for the sweep later today at 3:05 PM ET. We have Kyle Davies going and they have Aaron Cook going.
Despite more ninth inning drama, the Atlanta Braves were able to outlast the Colorado Rockies with a 9-7 victory Friday night. In the ninth inning, Matt Holliday hit a deep fly that could’ve tied up the game to Jeff Francoeur, who had dropped a double by Holliday earlier, but this time he made a very nice running catch on the warning track to end the game. After the game, while eating some barbecued ribs, he was given an extra rib by pitcher, Tim Hudson, who had his gem of a game blown in the ninth just two nights ago, and said “Here’s an extra rib for you”.
Francoeur, playing deeper than normal, raced after it and reached out his glove at the last second. The fans in the corner went quiet and Holliday threw down his helmet in disgust.
“Considering the situation, yeah it was [one of my better catches],” Francoeur said.
“I didn’t hit it great, but I thought I had a chance to tie the game,” Holliday said. “He made a good play. I wish he hadn’t made the play.”
Brave’s closer, Bob Wickman, came into the ninth, even though it wasn’t a save situation, most likely to regain his confidence after blowing only his second save opportunity as a Brave, but that was quickly over as he was unable to get the final out in the ninth, and forced Bobby Cox to go to two more pitchers to finally get the job done. I’m not too worried about Wickman, given the next time he comes in it will be a save situation, I think he’ll get the job done.
Both starters pitched quite well last night, Chuck James going 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs(all earned), striking out four and walking just one batter and Rockies starter, Jeff Francis also went 5 1/3 innings, 4 runs given up(all earned), striking out four and walking three. The big difference in the two pitchers was James gave up just 6 hits while Francis gave up 11, but Francis did get lucky, like when he got James to ground into a double play with the bases loaded while their were no outs. Both our big offseason additions, Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano, both had one scoreless innings of work and to go along, one strikeout each.
Our offense was very good tonight, we continued our regiment of hitting homeruns and getting 2-out hits with Craig Wilson(must be the socks) going deep for the first time as a Brave and Andruw Jones continuing his hot hitting at Coors, went deep for the 4th time on the year and his 13th career HR at Coors. The Braves had eight runs with two outs gave them a major-league-leading 63 two-out RBIs. Chipper Jones had a big 2-out, 2-run double(his second of the game) in the 7th inning and gave the Braves a four run lead, which turned out to be the difference in the game. The word clutch to describe the Braves is a bit of an understatement, but i’ll take it.
“I don’t know how to explain it,” Cox said. “One thing is we have good hitters. We’re always capable.”

The Braves next game is later tonight at 8:05 PM ET. We have John Smoltz, fresh off his new contract, going and the Rockies have Jason Hirsh going.
NOTE: Were back in first place in the East, we now lead the Mets by half a game.
As part of the agreement, Smoltz will receive $14 million in 2008. The deal includes a vesting option for the 2009 season that automatically kicks in if Smoltz pitches in at least 200 innings in 2008. There also is a team option for 2010.
Financial details for the 2008 and 2009 seasons are not yet known.
I for one am beyond excited over this news, it turned what was a slow, boring, off-day into a joyful celebration that will inevitably result in me being arrested for public nudity after being tackled by the St. Louis Police. I can’t wait!
Ya’ll didn’t really believe Smoltz would leave, did you? Never even a sliver of doubt in my mind. Andruw, that’s a different matter altogether. But I never believed any of the B.S. rumors about “friends” who said he was disenchanted with the Braves and tired of their low-ball offers and blah blah blah.
Usually when your pitcher is pitching amazing, setting career highs in strikeouts and seemingly unhitable, you win. Well not last night, the Atlanta Braves fell to the Florida Marlins, 4-3, despite a Cy-Young type performance from Tim Hudson. Hudson was dealing through eight innings with no troubles from the Marlins sluggers, his sinker was fantastic, he was hitting all of his spots and he didn’t throw a ball above the knees of the batters from majority of the game. He had 12 strikeouts(a career high) and walked no one. But all that unraveled as soon as he stepped foot on the diamond in the ninth inning. He started off by giving up a single up the middle to Miguel Cabrera, the a single by Cody Ross to shortstop, that if Renteria hadn’t had the range of a dead penguin, he would have gotten it or at least stop it and still have time to make a throw to first, then yet another single, this one by Aaron Boone to load the bases.
“We got dominated for absolutely two hours, and then win in the last 15 or 20 minutes.” said Marlin’s 1st baseman, Aaron Boone.
At that point, Bobby Cox had seen enough and decided to go to our closer, Bob Wickman. Wickman had only blown one save as a Brave. Wickman inherited a pretty bad situation, bases loaded with no outs, but I had faith in our “beer-chugging, meat-eating, Superstar”. But like most things I believe in (I’ll marry Jessica Alba, or at least a drunken mistake, beggars can’t be choosers) but back to the game. On his first pitch, Miguel Olivo hit a 2-run double scoring both Cabrera and Ross. The Joe Borchard was intentionally walked and Josh Willingham hit for Henry Owens and he struck out after drawing a full count. Next up was the speedy centerfielder, Alfredo Amezaga, and Amezaga hit a blooper, maybe 80 feet, but it was deep enough to score Aaron Boone. So just like that, our 3-0 lead was depleted and we were no tied, with just one out. And Wickman’s very next pitch ended the game, it was a wild pitch that got past Brian McCann and scored Miguel Olivo, who started the scoring parade with his double.
“All I had to do was get three outs before they scored three runs,” Wickman said.“For me, it’s the most disappointing loss of the season for us,” Hudson said. “I felt as good as I have all year. But it stings that we didn’t win the ballgame.”
So we lost a game that appeared to be an easy win, Kelly Johnson led off the game with a homerun, then Chipper followed with his seventh of the season and then in the second inning Matt Diaz finally broke out of his slump with a solo homer and then take into count the amazing pitching by Hudson, we should’ve won this game, but alas we didn’t and we are still a half of a game behind the hated Mets.

The Braves next game is against the Colorado Rockies on Friday at 9:05 PM ET. The Braves have
It was a known fact that the out come to Tuesday night’s game between the Atlanta Braves and the Florida Marlins partly, well no, all because of the pitching match-up. The Marlins had Rick Vanden Hurk, a 21-year old rookie who has never pitched above single A before having to come up due to injuries and the Braves had Mark Redman, a shitty pitcher that makes Tim Wakefield look like Joel “103″ Zumaya. We would be better off using a tee as our 5th starter, we’d probably give up less runs. Vanden Hurk failed to get out of the 2nd inning and Redman was finally pulled in the 4th, and at the time the score was 6-6.
The offense started early for both teams, the Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to an Andruw Jones RBI single that scored Kelly Johnson, a Jeff Francoeur RBI double and a Scott Thorman 2-run single. Later in the second inning, Brian McCann walked in a run and then Francoeur chipped in with an RBI single. Our other runs came in the 6th inning when Brian McCann hit a sacrifice fly that scored Johnson and in the ninth when Pete Orr of all people knocked in two runs on a single, Kelly Johnson and Edgar Renteria also chipped in with back-to-back RBI singles. For the Marlins almost all of their offense came from their resident “Brave Killer”, the commander, Cody Ross. Ross hit a three-run homerun in the first inning and later in the third inning he hit a 2-run double off the top of the wall. Ross accounted for 5 of the Marlins 6 runs.
“I turned to [umpire] Tim McClelland and said, `This could be 36-36 after nine innings,”‘ Francoeur said.
The big story of this game was the Braves’ bullpen. The Bullpen went a total of 6 innings, giving up just 2 hits and no runs. They also walked just one batter while striking out seven. In fact, Tyler “Kali” Yates needed just 9 pitches to finish off a scoreless 7th inning. The “Thunder from Down Under”, Peter Moylan, was great. His submarine pitching style was good enough to hold the Marlins to three scoreless innings, three strike outs, just one walk and only one hit. Moylan also lowered his ERA to a respectable 3.86 while getting his first career Major League win.
“The ‘pen has been excellent all year long,” manager Bobby Cox said. “We’re going through too many pitchers right now, so I’ve got to piece the game together and still try to win.”
The next Braves’ game is tonight at 7:05 PM ET against the Florida Marlins. We have our Ace going, Tim Hudson and the Marlins have one of their many talented youngsters, Scott Olsen, going. I like our odds.
The Florida Marlin’s ace, Dontrelle Willis, was in a hurry to finish the game because he was about to become a father for the first time. Willis wasn’t completely on his game like he usually is, for obvious reasons, but he was still good enough to beat, at the time, the NL East leading Atlanta Braves. Willis went 6 2/3 innings, 3 K’s, 3 BB’s and gave up 5 runs(all earned), he also went 2-4 from the plate including a triple. Brave’s starter, Kyle Davies completely fell apart in the 5th inning, first giving up a 3-run homer to Miguel Olivo and then a 2-run shot by Dan Uggla, who has now hit 3 in the past two games.
“Even in the heat of battle, they understand the situation,” Willis said. “They were like, ‘Man, you’re a tough guy to be out here tonight.’ I was like, ‘Nah, just stupid.’”
This was probably Davies worst outings of the season, as he was barely able to even throw a strike. He finished with throwing 90 pitches, 46 of which were balls. He also was only able to go 4 innings, 3 K’s, 6 BB’s and he gave up 5 runs(all earned). The Braves were quickly down 8-2, they had had to go to the bullpen early, and we started Chris Woodward. So things were not looking too good. But Peter Moylan and Mike Gonzalez both had scoreless outings and we made a comeback, a comeback that wasn’t quite enough. In the 6th inning, Jeff Francoeur knocked Willis out of the game when he took him deep for his 4th homerun of the season. Frenchy had a huge game by the way, he went 4-5 with 4 RBI’s and that solo HR off of Willis.
“It’s good to know we kept fighting back,” Francoeur said. “If we had one more inning, I think we would have won the ballgame.”
In the 7th inning, Andruw Jones’ sacrifice fly scored Woodward and cut the lead to four and then the lead was cut to just three when Jeff Francoeur singled and scored Edgar Renteria. In the 9th inning, Chipper Jones went deep for the 6th time this season and followed behind him were back-to-back doubles by Andruw and Frenchy cut the lead to one. Brian McCann pinched hit next, he didn’t play to rest his bruised hand, he’s expected to play tonight though, but he struck out on a 3-2 count to young lefty, Renyel Pinto, who picked up his second career save. The Met’s sadly won last night and regained the top spot in NL East, but no worries, they’ll lose tonight against the Rockies, hopefully.
On the first pitch of the rubber game between hated rivals, Braves’ second baseman, Kelly Johnson showed that his 4 strikeout performance the day before hadn’t effected him. He took the Met’s future Hall of Famer, Tom Glavine, deep and gave the Braves a lead that they would eventually swindle. When you have two future Hall of Famers on the mound you’d expect a low scoring pitchers dual and after Glavine’s first pitch it was just that, at least until the 5th inning when the Met’s tied the game on a Shawn Green bomb to right field.
both scored off a Jeff In the sixth inning, the Braves took the lead once again when Andruw Jones and Brian McCann Francoeur 2-run single. A lead that was short lived when John Smoltz fell apart in the bottom half of the inning. First Smoltz gave up an RBI single to Jose Valentine that scored Carlos Delgado and then Jose Reyes, the “most exciting player in baseball” according to Chip Caray, who is the Braves’ announcer, came up with the bases loaded and just as fast as they were loaded they were unloaded when Reyes tripled down the right field line scoring Moises Alou, Shawn Green and Jose Valentine and put the Mets up 5-3. Then Paul LoDuca singled in Reyes and the Braves had to turn to the bullpen and it took Steve Coyler to end what was a miserable 6th inning that now had the Mets leading 6-3.
But just how our lead was quickly erased the inning before, in the 7th inning thanks to an Edgar Renteria 3-run homerun we had tied up the game for the 2nd time. And just like he’d done it in the first inning, Kelly Johnson put the icing on the cake in the 8th inning with a game winning 3-run homer. And Bob Wickman came in on the 9th, striking out one and earning his 6th save on the season.
After the game, Kelly Johnson, who had just had one of the best games of his short career, was obviously very excited and said the following. “That was one of the most exciting ones I’ve seen between the Braves and the Mets,” he said. “It’s only April. And if that’s something to look forward to for the rest of the year, it could be pretty exciting. I have a feeling that we’re going to change hands at the top of the division many more times.”
Braves’ ace, John Smoltz, felt the same as Johnson about the importance of this win and possibility of it being a “signature” win. “I don’t think it’s too early for any kind of signature win,” Smoltz said. “We were going to lose this game. For all the ways they scored in the sixth inning, it just looked like it was too much for us to come back. And for us to come back and win this game was just a tribute to everybody’s effort to not give in and not give up.”
Fellow future Hall of Famer and Braves’ third baseman, Chipper Jones, was a little more rational.
“Smoltzie plays once every fifth day,” he said. “It’s a nice win, don’t get me wrong. A signature win? Possibly. Maybe later on, down the road, you look back and say it was.”
and was tossed for There was also a scary scene in the game, when Braves’ catcher, Brian McCann squared around for a bunt in the ninth while facing Met’s Pedro Feliciano and was hit on his left ring and pinkie finger. He did stay in the game and after the game X-rays were taken and were negative. Also Braves’ manager, Bobby Cox was ejected in the sixth-inning after coming to the aide of Smoltzauguring balls and strikes. This ejection was his 127th of his illustrious career and moved him just four behind John McGraw for 1st all-time.

I haven’t been home for the past week, you see I was fired from my latest gig as Don Imus’ joke writer. Apparently one of my “jokes” didn’t go over too well, or something like that, to be honest i’m usually wasted by noon. Anyways I guess i’ll go ahead and stick with blogging about sports and jokes about my ineptness in the bedroom, because you know what they say, if you can’t laugh at yourself then everyone will fucking laugh at you anyway, or something like that. Damn I should really pay attention more.
Anyways there has been a lot going on in sports, We have had Super Prospect, Kevin Durant declare for the NBA, lots of injuries in baseball, trade talks starting back up between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs, and of course the racist comments about the Rutgers women’s basketball team from radio shock jock, Don Imus. Tiger is defeated by a relatively no name, the Denver Broncos cutting Pro-Bowl linebacker, Al Wilson, and the Atlanta Braves are the best team in baseball( boo yah bitches).
Let’s start off with the Don Imus comments he made on his radio show. He was basically talking about watching a few minutes of the Women’s National Championship game between Tennessee and Rutgers and he said that he noticed the players on Rutgers looked “rough” because they had tattoos and then went on to call them “some nappy headed ho’s”. Now obviously these remarks are ignorant and absurd and he should be fired. I can’t really say if he is a racist, because I have never listened or watched his show before, I know who he is but I don’t know if he is racist, but his comments were extremely offensive to the young women of the Rutgers basketball team, their coach, the parents of the players and his listeners. He definitely deserves to be fired for his comments. He later appeared on Reverend Al Sharpton’s radio show to discuss the situation. Now i’m not going to go into detail about Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, i’ll leave that to Jason Whitlock. But I will say there is a poll on the link I posted above that asks ” What are the Motives of Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton?” To Help themselves or help resolve the situation? And the vote is overwhelmingly in favor for the “Help themselves”, by a vote of 94% to 6%(almost 51,000 votes so far). But let’s not get into politics.
Texas Longhorn forward, Kevin Durant has ended speculation and has decided to forgo his sophomore season and declare for the NBA draft. Durant is widely regarded as either the best or second best prospect(depends on who you ask) right now and is drawing comparisons to Tracy McGrady and Kevin Garnett. I think he’s right in the middle of those two superstars, he better offensively then Garnett but not quite as good grabbing boards(although he had 11 rpg I believe) and is a better rebounder but not as good as a scorer as McGrady. I’m not surprised one bit that he has decided to declare seeing as how he won the Freshman of the Year, and both Player of the Year awards this year scoring over 25 ppg and 11+ rpg. He is assured to be a top 2 pick in this years draft it really depends on who gets the number one selection and it depends on if Ohio State Center, Greg Oden, will declare. He has said it’s still up in the air on whether he’ll stay or go.
Now i’m not a big golf fan, but I am a Tiger Woods fan. And when I do watch golf I want to see the guy win every tournament. And by watch it, I mean watch the highlights on Sportcenter. Now who had a 31-year old no-name golfer from Iowa winning the Masters? If your hand is up then you are a liar, unless you did pick him, then I apologize for calling you a fibber. In case you hadn’t heard, it was not Tiger Woods that won the Masters, it was non other than Zach Johnson. This is Johnson’s first career Major Championship victory. ESPN’s Jason Sobel had this to say… “Some will say this Masters lacked spark, lacked a great champion. But Johnson was the best player over 72 holes this week. He deserves this victory.” And I have to say, I agree with him.
In a somewhat surprising move the Denver Broncos have decided to go ahead and release Pro-Bowl linebacker, Al Wilson. They had attempted to trade Wilson to the New York Giants but the deal fell through shortly after being announced. I don’t necessarily know all the exact reasons on why they would release a player like Wilson other than to relieve some salary cap. Whoever does pick him up is going to have a playmaker on defense, that’s for sure. I expect the Giants to remain suitors and the Buffalo Bills might make a play for him aswell. I wouldn’t mind it if my Cincinnati Bengals acquired him, as far as I know he isn’t a problem player so it would be a great fit.
There have been quite a few big names headed or already on the Disabled list this season. Some recent guys that are headed to the DL are Yankee’s pitchers, Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano, Toronto Blue Jay’s closer, B.J. Ryan and L.A. Angel’s starter, Kelvin Escobar made his yearly stint on the DL last week. Already this season guys like Phillie’s starter, Freddy Garcia, D-Back’s starter, Randy Johnson, Pirate’s third baseman and last season’s NL Batting Champ, Freddy Sanchez, Atlanta Braves often injured(as of late) starter, Mike Hampton is lost for the season with another elbow injury, Rookie of the Year candidate last year, Josh Johnson of Florida have already been on the DL to name a few.
I’m sure if you swing by Davey’s blog you will have noticed that the trade talks between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs have started up again. The Dolphins desperately want quarterback, Trent Green and the Chiefs really want to get rid of the 36-year old veteran. So what’s the hold up? Well the Dolphins are offering a 2007 7th round draft pick and the Chiefs are requesting a 2007 2nd round pick. Obviously they are no where near close to settling. The Chiefs are mental if they think they are going to pry the Phins 2nd round picks for someone who the Chiefs will inevitably release. I’m quite sure they will work something out by the end of this week and they will come to agreement with something in the middle, most likely a 5th round selection or so. The dolphins are in need of a quarterback as it is now being reported that DaunteCulpepper’s day’s “are numbered”. So with the possible releasing or trading of him it will leave Miami with Cleo Lemon and some other scrub. Davey also is getting more excited then a pubescent girl with tickets to a Hilary Duff Concert at the idea of drafting Michigan State’s quarterback, Drew Stanton in either the 2nd or 3 round later this month.
And finally we come to the Atlanta Braves. The Braves are currently tied as the best team in baseball, sharing their 8-3 record with the Los Angeles Dodgers. And unlike last season when we had to rely on our offense and no pitching(except for Smoltz) this season we are doing it all with pitching and average offense. We currently have two pitchers with ERA’s under 1.00 including Tim Hudson who was tied with Chicago Cub’s, Rich Hill with an 0.64 ERA(Hudson pitched today giving up only 1 run in 7 innings of work). The other is lefty, Chuck James who’s ERA is at 0.82. James will be pitching tomorrow versus the Washington Nationals. Along with those two, John Smoltz is as expected, great and Kyle Davies is pitching like he did when he first came up from the minors a few years ago. But of course one guy just has to ruin the party and that guy is Mark “Fuckin” Redman. He has lost both of his starts and is sporting an ERA of 12.96. No wonder he was still available. But besides him the pitching has been pretty good. Rafael Soriano and Bob Wickman have both been lights out(except for one bad outing by Soriano), Mike Gonzalez is one crazy Mo-fo, and I wouldn’t have it any other way and even Chad Paronto has been great(although he is now on the DL). I have been very impressed with Kelly Johnson’s defense, his offense is slow right now, but he’s coming along and i’m not worried about it, Brian McCann has been nothing short of amazing, Chipper Jones has been pissing excellence lately especially from the right side and Edgar Renteria is leading us in batting average. Jeff Francoeur is off to a way better start than last year and Matt Diaz is hitting well, why he’s not starting everyday is beyond me. Now onto the dissappointments offensively so far. Ryan Langerhans, who is in front of Diaz on the depth chart(because of superior defense) is hitting a cool .100, Scott Thorman is off to a slow start, .150 but does have a game winning homerun, Craig Wilson is splitting time with Thor and is only hitting .143 and has yet to bat anyone in and Chris Woodward is about as useful as me providing something useful to society. But overall I am more than impressed with how we are playing and I feel great on how are season is going to end up. I would like to find a replacement for Mark “Fuckin” Redman, I would rather be raped by a Gorilla than watch him pitch. Damn, some of the stuff I think about. Anyways I will be posting a lot more, hopefully, seeing as how the NFL draft is like two weeks away and I still have 10 teams to review.
